Electric Vehicle Battery Swapping or Charging – which is better?

EV battery swapping VS charging

As the electric vehicle (EV) industry continues to gain momentum, it has been at the forefront of transformative change, with companies worldwide pushing the boundaries of EV charging technology.

While traditional charging methods have been prevalent, battery swapping has emerged as a revolutionary concept to address range anxiety and enhance convenience. In this article, we will delve into the world of battery swapping, its advantages over conventional charging, and the challenges that lie ahead.

1. Understanding EV Charging

Conventional EV charging involves home chargers, where vehicles are plugged in 6-8 hours overnight for a full charge. However, counting solely on home charging may not be convenient or reliable enough for many EV owners, as it fails to address range anxiety, especially during extended drives.

As such, fast charging stations have also been introduced, providing a quick recharge option for electric motorbikes. Although these charging stations allow users to recharge quickly during the day, they still require significant waiting times of 20-40 minutes, making them unable to completely eliminate the fundamental issue of waiting at charging stations.

2. The Rise of Battery Swapping

Battery swapping, on the other hand, revolutionises this entire process. Selex Motors battery swapping network consists of strategically positioned battery swapping stations across 3 major cities in Vietnam: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and Hue. Riders can easily locate the nearest battery swapping station via the Selex Motors’ all-in-one mobile app, anytime and anywhere they are.

Picture this: Within a mere 2 minutes, riders can effortlessly exchange their depleted EV batteries for fully charged ones, instead of waiting around for their motorbikes to be fully charged.

This solution surpasses even the fastest conventional charging times, which typically requires a minimum of 20 minutes. The exhausted batteries are then recharged at the station, ready for the next user. This eradicates the biggest weakness of battery charging – long charging durations, thus allowing our riders to be more efficient and enjoy uninterrupted journeys on the road.

3. Benefits of battery swapping

3.1 Time-Saving

Selex Motors’ two-minute battery swapping process significantly reduces waiting times, enabling EV owners to get back on the road swiftly. Logistic delivery fleet owners, in particular, benefit greatly from the quick battery swaps, allowing riders to get back on the roads quickly to fufill more delivery orders.

3.2 Extended Driving Range

Battery swapping provides an efficient solution to make long distance travel more viable. By offering fully charged batteries in a fraction of the time required for conventional charging, Selex Motors eliminates range anxiety and empowers EV owners to embark on long-distance journeys without limitations. EV battery swapping eliminates 2 crucial concerns for delivery riders: loss of charging time and range anxieties.

3.3 Cost-Saving for users

Battery swapping eliminates the need for consumers to bear the upfront cost of batteries, which represents a significant portion of about 40% of an EV’s price (Mckinsey, 2020). By not having to pay for built-in batteries, users can access affordable electric mobility without compromising on performance or range.

3.4 Preservation of Battery Health

Battery swapping promotes the lifetime of batteries. When swapped batteries are charged slowly and optimally at the station, their lifespan increases, resulting in reduced ownership costs. Furthermore, EV battery health deteriorates more quickly when it is charged quickly at fast chargers as illustrated in the diagram below.

* 1) State of Health (SOH) – The capability of the battery to retain charge as compared to its rated value. A higher SOH value implies longer the battery health. 2) Direct-current fast charge (DCFC) – Fast EV charger type which recharges 80% of battery within 20-40 minutes

4. Challenges

4.1 Widespread availability of swapping stations

A key hurdle in the adoption of battery swapping is to establish a comprehensive network of charging stations. By strategically deploying a dense grid of stations, we can enhance user convenience and propel the advancement of battery swapping. As of now, Selex Motors has over 50+ swapping stations deployed in major cities across Vietnam: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue. We aim to surpass 100 swapping stations by the end of 2023, ensuring that riders are never too far away from a convenient refuelling option, no matter where they are.

4.2 Capital-investment for EV companies

Netherless, establishing a sufficient number of battery swapping stations requires substantial initial capital investment, posing risks and cost challenges for early adopters. However, this investment is crucial for creating a robust and reliable infrastructure, which Selex Motors sets out to achieve.

4.3 Incompatibility of batteries with EVs

Existing charging stations use different standards, rendering them incompatible with battery swapping stations. The lack of standardised battery specifications poses hurdles for consumers to find battery swapping stations that support their specific EVs. Incompatibility between charging standards can hinder the seamless experience of battery swapping, making it essential for industry stakeholders to work together in fostering compatibility across different EV models.

At Selex Motors, we ensure that our universal battery is compatible with 70% of electric vehicles in the market. We believe that building an interconnected ecosystem which accommodates different EV models will facilitate the seamless integration of battery swapping services.
