Many foreign tourists visiting Vietnam are surprised to find a battery-swapping electric motorbike rental service available as a means of exploring tourist destinations across Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.
According to Decree 168/2024/NĐ-CP, foreigners in Vietnam without a valid motorbike license will be subject to administrative fines for violating traffic safety regulations. This has increased the demand for electric motorbikes as a convenient and legal transportation option for tourists, especially international travelers.
Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, CEO of Trung Nam Electric Vehicle Joint Stock Company, shared that his company has been offering electric motorbike rental services to tourists for the past two years in the Hue – Da Nang – Quang Nam region. Recently, the service has gained more popularity after the company introduced EVGO electric motorbikes integrated with Selex Motors’ battery-swapping service.
“We currently have 200 EVGO battery-swapping electric motorbikes for rent, and by 10 a.m. each day, they are typically all rented out. This service is highly favored by foreign tourists, and even domestic travelers are showing great interest. Due to overwhelming demand, we are planning to invest in 2,000 more EVGO electric motorbikes to expand this service,” the Trung Nam Electric CEO said.
Analyzing the advantages of the service, Mr. Cuong explained that with a rental price of 120,000 VND per electric motorbike—equivalent to that of a gasoline bike—customers don’t incur any additional costs. When the battery runs out, users can go to designated battery-swapping stations, called “electric motorbike battery ATMs,” developed in partnership with Selex Motors. With conventional electric motorbikes that do not support battery swapping, users would need to wait for charging or switch bikes. In contrast, EVGO’s swappable battery feature makes the experience smoother, more economical, and the vehicle’s unisex design suits both men and women.
Battery-Swapping Electric Motorbikes Attract Foreign Tourists
A tourist from Taiwan (China) was highly impressed to see battery-swapping electric motorbike rentals in Hoi An (Quang Nam). Although this service is common in Taiwan, the visitor did not expect to find it in Vietnam. The tourist gave high praise for the service and has since recommended it to many friends planning to visit Vietnam.
Meanwhile, tourists from Eastern Europe expressed great appreciation for the eco-friendly nature of electric motorbike travel. Currently, there are 20 battery-swapping stations deployed by Selex Motors in the Hue – Da Nang – Quang Nam region. Major tourist spots such as Hoi An, Ba Na Hills, My Son Sanctuary, Than Tai Mountain, Lang Co, and the Imperial City all have electric motorbike “battery ATM” stations. Tourists can rent electric bikes by the day, month, or even year with convenient battery-swapping included. The battery-swapping fee is pre-paid in monthly packages by Trung Nam Electric and subsidized for tourists, making the experience more cost-effective than traditional gasoline bikes and highly enjoyable.
Battery-Swapping Electric Motorbikes Attract Foreign Tourists
Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen, CEO of Selex Motors, said the company currently operates 100 battery-swapping stations nationwide, focusing on major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and tourism hotspots such as Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An (Quang Nam). With the goal of providing a green travel experience and promoting sustainable transport, Selex Motors plans to expand to 300 battery-swapping stations across Vietnam within the next year.
“Many tourists are surprised to find such advanced battery-swapping electric motorbike services in Vietnam—something not even available in their home countries. They are amazed by Vietnam’s technological advancements and the environmentally friendly solutions. This service offers a practical alternative at a time when gasoline motorbike regulations are tightening in Vietnam,” the Selex Motors CEO noted.
According to Mr. Hoang Manh Tan, Vice Chairman of the Board at Son Ha Energy Development Joint Stock Company (manufacturer of EVGO bikes), the growing popularity of battery-swapping EVGO bikes among tourists is a positive sign for the Vietnamese manufacturing industry. It demonstrates that Made-in-Vietnam products are winning over both local and international customers and are becoming an increasingly attractive choice, contributing to the promotion of green, eco-friendly tourism.
